History Repeating Itself

We all know about the legendary Titanic that struck an iceberg on its way from England to New York City. The ship sank on 15 April 1912 resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

Last Friday, Italy cruise ship Costa Concordia sank on the first night of a Mediterranean cruise. Most of its 4,000 passengers and crew reached land by lifeboats but some swam ashore. However, 64 people were injured, 6 people have died and 15 are still missing.

The president of Costa Cruises, Gianni Onorato, said that it was difficult to determine what had happened, but the ship had experienced a blackout after hitting "a big rock".

On January 14 The captain, Fransesco Schettino, was arrested as he was accused of "human error" over the crash. Some claim he was drunk and was sailing far too close to land to salute to a friend on the island of Giglio. His certain accusation is that he abandoned the ship before ensuring of all 4,200 people abroad were safely evacuated.

Problem is the ship's tank was almost full the moment of the accident as it was just beginning the week-long cruise, and the heavy fuel is hard to pump out unless it was heated or diluted.

Meanwhile, rescue operations stopped because the ship began to sliding into the sea.
